Saturday night at Irmo High School, in front of several thousand spectators, the Wando High School Marching Band dominated the South Carolina 5A State Marching Band Competition being named 2017 State Champion. Wando achieved an overall finals score of 96.7 with its performance of, “Electra, Birth of Light,” which also won every caption category: Music Performance, Visual Performance and Overall Effect. Arriving home in Mount Pleasant early Sunday morning, they were greeted with a Mount Pleasant Police escort and hundreds of cheering parents and fans.

Fourteen 5A South Carolina bands participated in the State Competition preliminaries; eight were named finalists including two from the lowcountry, Summerville High School which placed third with a score of 92.85 and Ashley Ridge High School which placed sixth with a score of 87.15. James F. Byrnes High School from Spartanburg came in second to Wando with a score of 94.45.

This is the 11th State Championship for the Bands of Wando High School Marching Program. The band was named tops in the state for nine straight years, but in 2014, and 2016 the band did not appear at S.C. 5-A State Competition in order to pursue the Bands of America Grand National stage where they placed as a top 12 finalist both times. Returning back to the S.C. 5-A competition this year, Wando is again State Champion.

“This is indeed an honor for all of us,” said Bobby Lambert, Wando’s Director of Bands. “Eleven state championships is a feat not seen in many other arenas. Our school and administrators are incredibly supportive along with some of the best parental and community support one could ask. Our students created a truly amazing performance. We’re so proud of their accomplishment but also the incredible character they displayed in front of the entire state.”

Wando band's junior drum major AJ Johnston, said, “It’s a great feeling that all the hard work we’ve done since last spring has paid off. Getting to know everyone in the band, especially the freshmen, has been an amazing experience. “

Last weekend Wando Marching Band placed 2nd at the Bands of America Super Regionals in Atlanta out of 31 marching bands that competed from around the southeast.

In recognition of The Bands of Wando’s many accomplishments in marching and concert programs, the Town of Mount Pleasant Mayor Linda Page has proclaimed Monday, Nov. 6, 2017 as Bands of Wando Day, “in Mount Pleasant in congratulations for the hard work and dedication of both staff and students in continuously achieving these successes.”
