Bratcher, Russ

Teacher Headshot Russ Bratcher is a Lowcountry native from Georgetown, SC. He served in the U.S. Air Force from 2002-2006 at Royal Air Force Mildenhall, UK, and worked as a welder and machinist maintaining MH-53, KC-130 and KC-135 aircraft. After serving in the military, he completed an undergraduate degree in March 2011 from The Art Institute of Charleston, earning a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Web Design & Interactive Media. In 2014, he earned a Master of Arts in Teaching with a focus in Art Education from Coastal Carolina University.

Russ brings a unique perspective to his students past the visual arts. He is proud to have worked as a designer in Charleston with Gulfstream Media, known for Charleston magazine, Lois Lane properties, The Art Institute of Charleston public relations, Rawle Murdy and Colonial Candle. Industry experience is invaluable and he designs the students' experience in class as if students would be seeking a high-level internship or job in these careers.

Russ is dedicated to upholding the South’s unique heritage through his current series. For the past two years, he has been working on a body of work that depicts musicians from the South. In 2013, one of these paintings, “Dreaming of Jazz,” earned Best in Show at The Rice Museum in Georgetown, SC.

Russ is a product of The Georgetown County Gifted and Talented Project B.E.A.C.H. Drama Program and returned in June 2015 as a teacher in drama and in 2018 in the visual arts. He has also served as both director and board member at Winyah Auditorium.

When not teaching, Russ can be found at the gym, cooking or being a tourist in Charleston! Learning in school was always exciting for Russ, and he hopes to inspire young students in the visual and performing arts.
