Theatre Students Really Perform in Competition

Theatre StudentsWando High School Theatre Students were very successful at recent state competition, earning the most awards of any participating school.   Wando junior Caylee McConnell received the prestigious "Triple Threat" award, earning the most overall points in the competition with her 1st and 2nd place finishes.  Junior Kate Wander was also a double award winner, earning 1st and 3rd place honors.  Other medalists were Adelle Lacy, Alyssa Stone, Gabby Klok, Lexi Burgess, Jah’mar Coakley, Eleanor Ross, Sedona Scheuhle, Riley Hills, Hannah Smith, Chris Trevino, Stephen Brooke, and Vicki Doyle. Tamara Alquza, Will Basco, MacKenzie Fowler and Margo Turman were finalists. 

The competition, sponsored by the South Carolina Speech and Theatre Association, was held on March 18 at USC-Upstate in Spartanburg, SC. Over 200 students representing 18 schools participated in individual and group acting, musical, speech and design events. Wando students are under the direction of Lori Carroll, with assistance from Destini Fleming, Katie Givens, and monologue coaching from Olivia Isgett-Rubin. 

This is the second state competition in which Wando Theatre students have excelled. The one-act play “The Velveteen Rabbit” placed 5th in state one-act competition, where Jah’mar Coakley and Mara Pfeil were named to the All-Star Cast.  For more information on Wando Theatre, go to
