Russ Bratcher is a Lowcountry artist from Georgetown, SC and has been teaching since 2014. His earliest memories of pursuing art were at twelve years old, when his parents would drop him off to explore the art of drawing and watercolor with local artist and mentor Bruce Chandler in Georgetown.
He served in the U.S. Air Force from 2002-2006 at Royal Air Force Mildenhall, UK, and worked as a welder and machinist maintaining MH-53, KC-130 and KC-135 aircraft. After serving in the military, he completed an undergraduate degree in March 2011 from The Art Institute of Charleston, earning a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Web Design & Interactive Media. In 2014, he earned a Master of Arts in Teaching with a focus in Art Education from Coastal Carolina University.
Russ is dedicated to upholding the South’s unique heritage through his current series. For the past two years, he has been working on a body of work that depicts musicians from the South. In 2013, one of these paintings, “Dreaming of Jazz,” earned Best in Show at The Rice Museum in Georgetown, SC.
Russ is a product of The Georgetown County Gifted and Talented Project B.E.A.C.H. Drama Program and returned in June 2015 as a teacher. He has also served as both director and board member at Winyah Auditorium.
When not teaching, Russ can be found enjoying Charleston's vibrant food scene or spending time with friends at one of the nearby beaches.
