Earth Science is a laboratory course designed to serve as a foundation course for other high school science courses. It emphasizes inquiry-based learning, process skills, and higher order thinking skills. Instruction is based on the SC Science Curriculum Standards, where that content will be interwoven within multiple case studies throughout the semester. Because experimentation is the basis of science, laboratory investigations are an integral part of this course. Investigative, hands-on laboratory activities that address the high school inquiry standards are central to effective instruction in this course. The following scope and sequence of the class is based on the South Carolina Earth Science State Standards. General topics of each unit, standards covered within each unit, and the general time frame of each unit.
Science is an enjoyable subject, but it can be a bit overwhelming for some students. Many of our lessons will require additional practice or reading through homework. I encourage you to make yourself aware of the homework assignments and provide any help that you are able to give. Below is a list of things you can do to help your student succeed in my class:
Ask them about the current topic we are studying.
Ask them about the latest laboratory investigation we did.
Help them understand that memorizing is one way to study but that they must be able to get outside of the box and understand how the information is related to other concepts. Ask them to explain why something they are learning is important or simply to explain what something means.
Encourage them to prepare for tests by studying daily.
If your student needs additional help I will be available on Tuesday afternoon from 3:35 to 4:05 and Thursday morning from 7:30-8:00 am. I am also available at other times by appointment. Please encourage them to come see me if they are having difficulty grasping a specific concept.
Again, I am looking forward to this coming semester. If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to get in touch with me. My phone number at school is 849-2830,ext. 23951.
